What’s New for the 2018 Nissan Versa?

Since the Versa—Nissan’s subcompact sedan offering—is ostensibly nearing the end of its second generation of production, there are no major changes for the 2018 model year: mechanical or cosmetic. However, the SL trim is gone, replaced by a spruced-up version of the SV named the SV Special Edition. Thus, the current trim line-up, is as follows, in ascending order: S, S Plus, SV, and SV Special Edition.

Under the hood of the 2018 Nissan Versa is the HR16DE, which is a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine that supplies 109 horsepower and 107 lb-ft of torque. Except for the base-level S model—which has its engine hitched to a 5-speed manual transmission (6MT)—the Versa uses a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Eschewing the energy-consuming gear-shifting mechanism of the 6MT, the CVT consequently provides a smoother and more fuel-efficient ride. In terms of fuel economy, the 6MT provides 27/36 mpg while the CVT provides 31/36 mpg. Designed as a subcompact five-seater, the 2018 Versa supplies 90.2 cubic feet of passenger volume, as well as 14.9 cubic feet of standard cargo volume from its trunk.

Front seating comprises a pair of 4-way manually adjustable seats, which are upgraded to 6-way on the SV and SV Special Edition. A leather-wrapped steering wheel is exclusive to the SV Special Edition. Standard comfort and convenience features on the 2018 Versa include four-speaker audio, a single-disc CD player with MP3 and WMA playback capability, and an auxiliary audio jack for connecting mobile devices. Upgrading to the S Plus adds cruise control, and the SV also gets remote keyless entry, electroluminescent gauges, and a USB data port. Exclusive to the SV Special Edition are touches like hands-free text messaging ability, Bluetooth® wireless technology for hands-free phone calling and audio streaming, a complimentary three-month subscription to SiriusXM® satellite radio, and a 5-inch color screen. For restraint and cushioning when there’s a crash, the 2018 Versa has dual front impact airbags, dual front seat-mounted side impact airbags, and dual roof-mounted side curtain airbags. Also on board are electronic vehicle stability control to maintain the intended driving path, traction control to prevent skidding on slippery surfaces, electronic brake-force distribution to properly distribute stopping force to the wheels, brake assist to provide additional stopping force when necessary, and anti-lock braking to prevent the wheels from locking up when the brake pedal is suddenly pressed. The SV Special Edition is the lone trim with a rearview camera, which shows with a video image what or who is behind you when you are driving in reverse.
