What’s New for the 2020 Nissan Altima?
Even after kicking off its sixth production cycle in 2019, the Altima continues to evolve going into its 2020 model year. The main change made on this iteration is the expansion to all major trims—S, SR, SV, SL, and Platinum—of Safety Shield 360, which is Nissan’s advanced collection of safety and driver-assistance technologies. Safety Shield 360 not only includes the ProPILOT Assist system for hands-on driving assistance, but other features such as forward collision warning, lane keep assist, rear automatic braking, rear parking sensors, driver attention alert, blind spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams.
The standard engine is still the 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4), which generates 188 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque with the front-wheel drivetrain for maximizing fuel economy; and 182 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque with the optional all-wheel drivetrain for optimizing traction performance. Optional on the SR and Platinum and standard on the Edition One is a turbocharged 2.5-liter I4 that can produce up to 248 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. This engine is what Nissan claims is the world’s first “Variable Compression Turbo Engine.” However, this engine, appropriately called the VC-Turbo, is only available with front-wheel drive. Both engines are tied to a continuously variable transmission.
