Priced at more than $23,000, the 2018 Nissan Altima is a four-door car that combines modern functionality with solid performance. This mid-size vehicle comes in seven versions, including the cool SR Midnight Edition and the luxurious 3.5 SL. Having a starting price of just under $17,000, the 2018 Nissan Sentra is a compact sedan that’s available in nine trims. Both vehicles offer the NissanConnect infotainment system and Bose audio system.
As in previous years, Nissan decided to standardize a 2.5 L engine in the 2018 Altima. The maximum ratings for this four-cylinder engine are 179 horsepower and 177 pound-feet. The 3.5 L V6 engine cranks the peak output to 270 hp and 251 lb-ft. As a much lighter car, the 2018 Sentra naturally comes with a smaller and more economical powertrain. This model has a 1.8 L engine that generates up to 130 hp and 128 lb-ft. An all-new 1.6 L turbo engine propels the SR Turbo and NISMO trims. Running on the Direct Gasoline Injection technology, this I-4 engine whips out 188 hp and 177 lb-ft. A six-speed manual transmission system is installed in the NISMO and base editions. The other Sentra models come standard with the updated Xtronic CVT, which is available with the Manual Shift Mode. Every 2018 Altima also rolls on this adaptive transmission that creates unlimited combinations in the gearbox. Stamped with the ZF Sachs brand, the Altima’s shock absorbers are more resilient and durable than those in the Sentra. Additionally, this mid-size Nissan sedan is stabilized by the Active Understeer Control.
For its mid-size platform, the 2018 Altima has an aggressive and chiseled profile that’s optimized for sporty handling. Dual exhaust tips with chrome and active grille shutters emphasize the cool exterior design of this model. Of course, the exclusive SR Midnight Edition comes with plenty of custom accessories that improve performance and style. As a compact car, the 2018 Sentra naturally has a lightweight body that gets good aerodynamics. The Black V-Motion Grille, sport rear fascia, rear spoiler and side sills are some of the class-leading features that are available for this car. The color exterior palette for the Sentra and Altima include Deep Blue Pearl and Scarlet Ember.
The NissanConnect technology dominates the infotainment systems in the 2018 Altima and Sentra. However, the applications and features of this signature platform vary with each model. Facebook, Twitter and TripAdvisor are some of the apps that are available in the Sentra. This affordable sedan even has Google Online Search, iHeartRadio and Pandora. When it comes to mobile connectivity, the Altima’s NissanConnect system supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Sentra only has Siri Eyes Free for iPhones and other gadgets that operate on iOS. SiriusXM Satellite Radio is installed in both models, and HD Radio is available in the Altima. When it comes to guidance on the road, both Nissan vehicles are connected to SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link. You can also add the NissanConnect Services package to gain access to more than a dozen utilities, such as Emergency Call and Parked Car Finder. Overall, the Altima offers slightly more remote services than the Sentra. The sound system in each Nissan car comes with the signature Bose label that guarantees flawless acoustics. In addition to having lots of high-tech amenities, the Altima and Sentra offer smart safety features that continuously scan the surroundings. Both models have the Automatic Emergency Braking and Blind Spot Warning.
