What Is the Head Gasket?

The engine in your Nissan is basically divided into two sections, the cylinder head, which is where spark plugs, camshaft, and the valves are located, and the cylinder block, which is where the cylinders and cylinder block are located. The head gasket is between these two sections of the engine parts. The head gasket is used to seal the cylinders’ firing pressure and prevent engine oil and coolant from seeping into and outside of the cylinders. The head gasket is close to the combustion process, so it’s designed to be durable and typically made from composite materials or steel.

What Causes a Blown Head Gasket?

The engine of your Nissan works under extreme conditions and with intense heat. Unfortunately, if the heat is greater than it typically is, the engine may overheat and potentially cause a blown head gasket. When the heat from the engine becomes more intense than normal, it causes the engine block and cylinder head to expand too much, causing the head gasket to fail. Another cause for a blown head gasket is detonation, which allows the cylinder pressure to leak past the fire rings (armors), ultimately damaging the fire rings.

What are the Signs of a Blown Head Gasket?

The best way to avoid the risk of a blown head gasket is to make sure the engine coolant is always at the appropriate level and with the correct mixture recommended by the manufacturer. Some of the signs you should be aware of that indicate your Nissan may have a blown head gasket include:

  • Coolant leaking below the exhaust manifold
  • Loss of coolant, but there are no visible leaks
  • Engine is overheating
  • White smoke coming from the exhaust pipe
  • Oil is white and milky
  • Bubbles in the overflow tank or the radiator
  • The engine has low power or is running poorly

If you are like most Nissan vehicle owners, you take pride in maintaining your vehicle and you only want the best technicians to do any required maintenance or mechanical work. Whether you need a routine oil change or you need a head gasket replacement, the technicians at Carriage Nissan are trained, experienced, and knowledgeable in all mechanical aspects of your Nissan.
